I love to sew, mainly quilts and bags. I am 66, married to Fred and have one son, Matthew, who is 27. I enjoy embroidery and applique and prefer to machine piece and quilt my projects. I love my vintage Singer sewing machines especially my Featherweight 222K. I’m enjoying treadling on my 201K Singer and I collect Miniature Sewing Machines and currently have three Essex , one Singer 20, one Singer 40, two Vulcan Miniatures and my latest, a Grain. My love of sewing I believe comes from my Grandmother - I still have the drawings she made for me to embroider on tea towels many many years ago!

HAPPY NEW YEAR

A selection of "stuff I made" in 2013

Let's hope the collage I make for 2014 is twice the size!

The year 2013 passed so very quickly here in AuntyHenny's world.  As many of you know, Fred went through 2012 fighting cancer and 2013 was the recovery year.  That has gone quite well.  Unfortunately he is left with the sore feet and fingers (from the chemo) but otherwise feeling good.  Just recently we both returned to the Gym and feel great for it too.  Our son Matthew seems to have fully recovered from the brain injury incident of 2012 as well.  He returned to college in February of 2013 and has done very well.  I cannot believe it, but he turns 20 on January 19 - how on earth did that happen?  seems like yesterday he was just a toddler.

So what does 2014 hold for us?  Possibly more studies for Matt,  Fred and I will continue improving our fitness, we plan to spend a little more time up at our other home in Elliot Heads (where we hope to retire to), Fred plans on some home improvements around our house now that he is feeling up to it, I will be spending more time with my recently retired sister (she has plans for us!), I want to spend more time with my Mum too and to this end I have resigned my position with my Tuesday craft group so that I have that time to visit with Mum (still going well at 93 even with Dementia) and of course I plan to sew and sew and sew.  I won't call any of these things a "New Years Resolution" as we all know that never works…….  these are just things "on the list".

I find my love of sewing increases with each passing year and only wish I had discovered this wonderful craft much earlier in my life.  I hope to add to my vintage sewing machines this year (on the lookout for a Singer Featherweight).

2013 was a bit light on blog posts so that's another thing I plan to work on.

Happy New Year and Happy Sewing !
Cheers from Helen

  5. Helen, I have followed your comments on the A4A FB page but this is my first visit to your blog. How amazing to read that your son suffered a brain injury as my son also suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2009. He lost a year of college due to recovery but went on to graduate and is now in grad school. Best wishes for 2014, may we all have better health and more time for sewing!

  9. Lovely collection of work for 2013. Your love of children shines through brightly.
And Helen we certainly are alike. I already have a Singer Featherweight. Mine is white/cream coloured. I'd also like a treadle and a few vintage toy ones I ever have the room.
