I love to sew, mainly quilts and bags. I am 66, married to Fred and have one son, Matthew, who is 27. I enjoy embroidery and applique and prefer to machine piece and quilt my projects. I love my vintage Singer sewing machines especially my Featherweight 222K. I’m enjoying treadling on my 201K Singer and I collect Miniature Sewing Machines and currently have three Essex , one Singer 20, one Singer 40, two Vulcan Miniatures and my latest, a Grain. My love of sewing I believe comes from my Grandmother - I still have the drawings she made for me to embroider on tea towels many many years ago!

BIRDS IN THE AIR

BLOCK # 9    BIRDS IN THE AIR
CIVIL WAR QUILT

I have finally made the block for this week....  Birds in the Air.   Now, this should have been a very straightforward block but OH NO!    NOT FOR ME!   It took me three attempts before I was happy!  I just could not get it to come out at the correct size.  I tweaked the measurements just a little and this block is the result.

MY TWEAKING....

My HST'S which form the Birds in the Air are pieced at 3 1/8" and I used "scant"  1/4" seams.  My block is just a tad under
8 1/2" pieced   (8" finished)

MUG RUGS RECEIVED....

I received my two Mug Rugs last week and forgot to take a pic of the little parcel - which is a shame as there was chocolate involved!!  Mmmmmm... sorry, no piccy of the choccy!  Tina from Canada also sent me a lovely ID tag which I have put on my  Rotary Cutter.

MUG RUGS - WITH QUILTED LIST TAKER
READY TO SEND OVERSEAS

I have sent my parcel to my Mug Rug Swap partner.  I also put in a Quilted List Taker made with Australiana fabrics which included an Aussie notepad and pen plus bookmark.  My partner should receive the goodies within 10 days!

Our baby Kookaburra has been a frequent visitor and I have been able to get a little film with him/her having a go at the Kookaburra laugh........

This is my first attempt at uploading a video to my blog..... hope it works!  It's short but sweet:-)

Today our weather is unbearable!  Hot, hot, hot and HUMID,HUMID,HUMID - I can't describe what I'm wearing.... as in NOT wearing!  and the fan is on FULL BLAST!

Up in North Queensland the clean up begins.... what a terrible start to 2011 our Country is having.

MUG RUG # 2 AND KING PARROTS

No!  it's NOT our Spike in fancy dress!! - it's a KING PARROT  (link)

King Parrots
and more King Parrots!

MUG RUG # 2 - front

BACK OF MUG RUG # 2

Today I pieced the other Mug Rug.  I have used a selection of sewing notion fabric plus a tea cup/pot fabric and cupcake fabric.  Once again I have used the single binding method, this time cutting it at
1 1/2".  This method is really perfect for these little mug rugs!  I chose the green for the binding as it seemed to bring out the greens in all the other fabric.... and because it was the first fabric I picked up:-)

The King Parrots came to visit me yesterday!  Usually they are in pairs but I was very surprised to find about 6 of them on my deck!  I tried to take a couple of close-ups when they were sitting on my verandah railings but they are quite timid and most of them flew away.

ONE MUG RUG ... DONE!

FRONT OF MUG RUG
BACK OF MUG RUG

I am participating in the Quilting Gallery Mug Rug Swap.  We will be sending two Mug Rugs to our participant but we will receive two Mug Rugs from another participant.  I will be sending my Mug Rugs to someone overseas, so I thought one of the Mug Rugs should represent my own Country.  As I am also in the International Siggy Swap, I have a large collection of Australiana Fabrics so I have used these in this first Mug Rug.

I have used the single binding method as seen HERE - it is great for little projects like this!  I have cut my binding 2" for this project and was able to machine sew the final join.  This method gives such perfect corners!  As it is single binding, there is much less bulk.  Love it!

Now to think of another theme for the second Mug Rug!

The next Civil War block will be posted tomorrow..... how exciting!  I can't wait to see what we are doing next!

Happy Sewing!!
